| The History of St. Augustine Church: |
Historical St. Augustine CemeteryOriginally established by the Catholic community in the Ossining area before the founding of the parish, St. Augustine Cemetery was begun on land that was known as Sleator Farm. The oldest recorded internment was in 1847, six years before St. Augustine became a self-sustaining parish. Upon its formation as a parish entity in 1853 the land and operation of the cemetery was turned over to the parish by the Cationic community. In the old section veterans of the Indian Wars and Civil War are buried. The early twentieth century brought many burials from Sing Sing Prison and a number of internments of workers killed during the building of Croton Dam. Additional property for cemetery use was purchased by the parish in 1916. This new section was first used in 1920. Following World War II, the area of the cemetery known as the Veterans Section was donated to the Town of Ossining for use as a burial site for Ossining veterans. In the 1980's, with almost all of the grave sites used and the critical need for more burial sites increasing, development of additional suitable land areas of the cemetery was necessary. A project was inaugurated by engineers and cemetery designers to make more of the property usable for burial. Engineering, road design and landscaping were professionally planned with all requirements of municipal and county agencies carefully observed. With this expansion and improvement of the property, St. Augustine Cemetery will continue to provide burial services for the Ossining Community well into the next century. (Written in 1989.) |
