Midnight Run
Ministry @ Saint Augustine

DEACON STEVEN DeMARTINO

'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' Matthew 25:34

The Midnight Run from St. Augustine

The team meets at 7 PM on a Friday night at the School cafeteria.  The team is divided into two groups,  one to sort out the clothing and the other to prepare a meal for the homeless.

While the clothing is being arranged for easy distribution, the cooking team is making a meal for 125.

  • A large urn of coffee will be brewed and brought with us, and a BIG soup prepared and cooked.
  • 125 eggs will be hardboiled.
  • 250 sandwiches are needed.  Donated ham, bologna, turkey and cheese are made into sandwiches that are spread with donated mayo. If and when the cold cuts run out, the balance of the sandwiches are made with donated peanut butter and jelly.

Others make up 125 bags containing two sandwiches, one egg and, when we have them, an apple.  There is also donated juice and bottled water to be distributed to these needy people who live and sleep in the streets, allies, steps and parks through out the city.

The food and clothing are packed into our vehicles and our caravan of 3 to 5 vehicles leaves for Manhattan at about 9:30 PM.

We have a list of street corners to stop at.  When we arrive at a spot, someone will call out 'MIDNIGHT RUN!' and people will gather around our vehicles.  Sometimes, as you park, people will come to your window and ask if you're Midnight Run.

With expressions the range from joy to that of a lost soul, these people accept just what they need and can carry with gratefulness.

Others, sleeping in boxes, or all wrapped up on the step of a building or in an ally, who don't know we're there, we gently announce our presence and offer food and clothing.
