Nino Di Simone
T
he importance of Nino Di Simone's work is not the art of it.  It's not the statements his renderings make, nor is it his craft.  No, the importance of Maestro Di Simone's Stations of the Cross is it's ability to get under your skin and move you.

Stations of the Cross

by Nino Di Simone

Arranged by Monsignor Hilary Franco, Pastor
March 21 1997

I remember my first viewing of this magnificent work.  I was with my family: my wife, our then 20 year old son and two young daughters.  Martine was only a baby then, but the rest of us were effected deeply by what we saw.
Here Jesus is not the scalped-marble muscular man, reclined in prayer that  we saw in Gatsamani Church, outside of Pestum, Italy; nor the Jesus whose loving eyes and sacred heart watched over the boy I was, from above my bed; no this Jesus stood there before me an abused and tortured man.
A man facing a horrible death.
And those around him were not looking on the Son of God...no, they were looking at a man, a son, a friend, a teacher, a peaceful man who'd taught them of love and respect and salvation.  A man unjustly condemned to death.
And they watched on as he was beaten and humiliated a step at a time, until finally, broken and near death, He called on His Father to forgive his tormentors, and accepting his fait, He succumbed to death.

The Maestro has achieved a level of emotion in his depiction of each of the characters in this drama, as yet unattained.
And then Professore Di Simone takes the story one step further to it's miraculous conclusion.  In his last, the fifteenth sculpture, he shows Jesus rising from death and giving us, each of us, the hope that is the foundation of our faith.
Thus the haunting figures are validated by the miracle.

This magnificent work is on permanent display in the outdoor Garden of the Stations of the Cross at St. Augustine Church at Eagle Park, in Ossining, New York.  It is situated on a plateau above the Hudson River, overlooking Eagle Bay, Croton Point Park and all of the beauty of the Lower  Hudson River Valley.
The Croton River Delta has been enhanced by the development of what is now Croton Point Park.  The lowlands of Croton Point were raised to form a rolling landscape with great lawns, shade trees and beaches.
A comfortable place to picnic or enjoy the river breeze on hot summer days, Croton Point Park is also a home to concerts and fairs.
You are always welcome to visit St. Augustine at Eagle Park, to view the art or to take advantage of the serenity.
